European Cottage Garden

Residential Project

The classic architecture of this home, reminiscent of a European Cottage set in the countryside, provided the inspiration for this project. The generous property which sits on almost 1 acre, gently borders a state park forest. Once the owners took part in a lengthy architectural and interior design renovation, they wished to marry the outside environment with what was created on the inside. The importance of sight lines from the home’s new windows and generous French doors to the expanded woodland fringe, became the jumping off point to the design program. The casual elegance of the central pea stone terrace accented with subtle placements of bluestone flagging creates the space which the owners could now spend their time outdoors and circulate throughout the property. This new outdoor room is subtly divided by custom lattice fencing that is gently stained an earthy grey color. The fencing subtly screens the private spaces from the road yet provides a humble backdrop for tumbling roses and perennials. A covered pergola that is graced with a Fall clematis, creates the ideal space for sharing meals with friends and family. Finally, a neighboring lounge space was designed using local bluestone to create an intimate patio for gathering after meals or resting.
