This Cresskill, New Jersey landscape was inspired by a Modern Japanese garden. Working with existing stone walls, Brazilian hardwood gates were added to create a cohesive aesthetic in the courtyard. A transom window above the gates illuminates the space with natural light and creates structure. In the courtyard low growing grasses intermingle with structural shrubs and moss, an homage to the Japanese Zen Garden inspiration. The existing koi pond was re-imagined by altering its edge and water source flow. Black Mexican pebbles on the pathway pay respect to the modernity within the space. The flowing pathways lead you to the pool oasis, with low growing grasses blending perfectly with the courtyard’s existing plants. A red weir provided a modern pop of color by the pool to create a soothing water element that allows for thoughtful water flow.
